Marriage Skill 17:
Understand How Needs Met and Not Met from Childhood May Affect Marriage As a child, you had God-given needs. How well did your care-givers meet them? Is your ability to relate to your partner strengthened or hindered by this? Is your partner’s ability to relate to you strengthened or hindered by what they did or did not receive in childhood? How does this affect your parenting style? What is the impact on your children? For each of the needs above give your father, mother and any other significant care-giver (grandparent, siblings, relatives, neighbors) a score from zero to ten (zero equals totally neglected and ten indicates loving and adequately met). While doing this exercise you may become tearful and sad. Don’t resist those feelings as they can indicate some very important things about yourself. Top 12 Commonly Identified Needs Need/Father/Mother/Other Acceptance Admonition Affection Appreciation Approval Attention Comfort Encouragement Instruction Respect Security Support What needs were met well and how has that impacted the way you relate to your partner (and children)? What needs were not met adequately? How has this impacted the way you relate to your partner (and children)? How are your behaviors today influenced by what needs you did or did not receive in childhood? If you experienced tears or sadness, notice that time did not heal all wounds. Something else is needed. How has your present marriage been impacted by needs met or not met in childhood? |
